Stars and Trees in the Sierra
on a Moonless Night
(View Photos) December 9, 2007 Randy Smith and I headed out late in the evening hoping to find clear skies at Donner Summit. These photos were taken near the summit at the Loch Leven's trailhead on a dark moonless night not too long after the first decent snowfall of the winter. These were 40-second exposures and the trees were "painted" for about 10 seconds. |

A Night Among the Bristlecone
Pines
(View Photos) November 25, 2007 These photos were taken in the Patriarch Grove (11,200' elev.) in California's White Mountains during the early evening hours. The skies were crystal clear with a full moon rising as the set set. As a result, all photos were taken with natural light. Unfortunately, because of the full moon, star fields were nowhere near as full as I had hoped. |

Fall Color in Hope Valley Area
(View Photos) October 7, 2007 Fall happened quickly this year in the Sierra. While there were a lot of areas with bare limbs or brown leaves, there were still plenty of beautiful trees to be found. These photos are from the south side of Luther Pass along Hwy 89 and from Sorenson's Resort. |

Yosemite Half Dome Full Moon

(View map of hike) September 28, 2007 This was an awesome full moon hike from the lower Yosemite Valley beginning at 3:00 AM, reaching the top of Half Dome at 8:45, and arriving back at the car at 3:30 PM. The trails were unbelievably serene during the pre-dawn portion of the hike - I didn't encounter another hiker until 6:30 AM. I only wish I had more time to stop for moonlight photography along the way. |

Caples to Emigrant Lake Hike

(View map of hike) September 23, 2007 This was a Sierra Club sponsored hike. We weren't sure whether the weather was going to cooperate but as it turned out we were fortunate to have several light snow showers during the hike which created a wonderful sense of solitude and certainly made the photography more interesting. |

Big Sur Coast at Sunrise

Photo Workshop at Salt Point
State Park
(View Photos) July 13 - 15, 2007 This was a weekend photography workshop hosted by Jennifer Wu and Wendy Desormeaux at Salt Point State Park 18 miles north of Jenner. I had not hiked or photographed in this area before and amazed by the diversity - redwoods, wonderful carved rocky beaches. I definitely plan to come on a regular basis. |

Rockbound Pass in the
Desolation Wilderness

It was particularly rewarding because we had plenty of excellent photo opportunities along the way. Unique geologic formations were everywhere - Xenoliths, huge granite monoliths, you name it... |

(View map of hike) May 19, 2007 This was an 8-mile hike beginning at Carr Lake and passing many lakes along the way - Feely, Island, Round, Crooked, Penner, and Culbertson. The weather was perfect but we were surprised by the amount of snow still on the ground - it definitely made for a long 8 miles. |

Hike Along North Fork of the
American River

(View map of hike) May 6, 2007 This was a hike along the north fork of the American River. We started an 1800' descent down the canyon and crossed the river on a bridge at Euchre Bar. From there we hiked to Humbug Bar, had lunch, and returned along the same route. A lot of old mining relics were seen along the way. |

Hike on Tomales Point at Point
Reyes National Seashore
(View Photos) March 17, 2007 We thought the seashore would be a nice change from our recent snowshoe treks. The hike to Tomales Bluffs, led by Paul Cyphert, was a little foggy and windy but a great day nonetheless. The hills and bluffs were green and lush - a big change from my last hike here 6 months ago. |

Snowshoeing Carson Pass - Winnemucca

(View map of hike) February 17, 2007 This was a snowshoe hike from Carson Pass to Winnemucca Lake and back. The group was led by Paul Cyphert (aka "The Goat). We had beautiful weather and fairly new snow but the tops were pretty wind-blown. |
